Since submariner qualification badge No. 1 was awarded to Yosale Dror, thousands of young men have graduated from the Submarine School and received the coveted submariner’s badge. Sixty-seven years have passed since INS Tanin arrived in Haifa. A fifth generation of submarines is now moored at the submarine pier in Haifa harbour. A fifth generation of submariners operates these modern, sophisticated boats, including sons of submariners who served in S-class, T-class, Gal-class and even Dolphin-class submarines.
Ultimately, behind the machine there is always a person. Whether he is sweating in 40°C heat in the noisy, sweltering engine room of an S-class submarine, penetrating enemy waters in a T-class boat, fighting terrorists in a Gal-class submarine or operating sophisticated systems in an air-conditioned Dolphin-class submarine, the old submariners’ motto, “Here, the person makes the difference,” still applies to today’s generation of submarines and submariners.
No submarine is better than the people who crew her, and no people are better than submariners. This page features photographs of some of these men of the sea and the deep, who have shaped, and continue to shape, the Submarine Flotilla.
